Howard Gardener's theory of multiple intelligence is a revolutionary theory in psychology which changed the way educators and people in general thought about intelligence. The conventional notion of intelligence focused on how a student scored in standardized tests testing the three R's of 'traditional" education, namely, reading, writing and arithmetic. What about a child who is excelling in sports, music or art? Are they not intelligent in their own special way? Howard Gardener thus broadened what intelligence was believed to encompass to include a wide range of intelligent skills and qualities that individuals can exhibit from being accomplished in music to enhanced social skills.
The following is a brief glimpse into Howard Gardener's theory of multiple intelligence which initially identified seven types of intelligence domains, namely, verbal/linguistic, logical/mathematical, musical, bodily, visual-spatial, interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligence.
1. Verbal/Linguistic: Verbal/linguistic intelligence was identified as having a deep sensitivity to words and being proficient in the use of words, having an enhanced vocabulary and being able to read and write very well. Students who have developed their verbal-linguistic intelligence will be good at reading and writing activities like writing essays, creative stories, poetry and conveying messages verbally and in a written form in a thoughtful manner.
2. Logical/mathematical: Logical/mathematical intelligence was identified as being able to do calculations very well and being good at solving problems involving numbers. Students who have a good understanding of number concepts and are able to play around with numbers and see patterns involving numbers have developed a good logical-mathematical intelligence.
3. Musical: Musical intelligence was identified as having a flair for sounds, rhythms, tones, beats and different pitches. Students who have developed their musical intelligence will be good in singing, playing musical instruments and composing music.
4. Bodily: Bodily intelligence was identified as being able to have good coordination and control of the body and coordinating and controlling muscular movements of the body well. Students who have developed their bodily intelligence will be good in sports, dancing, etc.
5. Visual-spatial: Visual-spatial intelligence was identified as being able to visualize and crystallize visual imagery and being able to have a good sense of spatial dimensions. Students who have developed a good visual-spatial intelligence will be good in art work like drawing and sculpting and in imagining and creating other 2- and 3-dimensional images.
6. Interpersonal: Interpersonal intelligence was identified as being able to have healthy social relationships with other human beings and being able to inspire others. Students who have developed a good interpersonal intelligence will have deep and meaningful friendships and will be able to reach out to others and empathize with people well.
7. Intrapersonal: Intrapersonal intelligence was identified as being able to introspect, meditate and be in touch with inner feelings and emotions. Students who have developed a good intrapersonal intelligence will have a calm and composed demeanor and are good at working towards their dreams and goals, known for their wisdom and will be able to self-actualize.
